Catfish est un documentaire qui a apparemment généré pas mal de buzz lors de sa présentation au festival du film de Sundance 2010. Le film, qui est prévu pour un lancement "limité" le 17 septembre, raconte grosso modo l'histoire d'un jeune homme, Nev Schulman, qui développe une relation avec une fille sur Facebook. Le tout a été tourné par son frère, qui s'adonnait à suivre son périple avec sa caméra numérique.

Love and identity become twisted across the lines of the Internet in this documentary from filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Nev Schulman is a photographer who one day received a surprising e-mail message -- Abby, an eight-year-old girl in Michigan, had seen his picture in a newspaper and wanted permission to paint a portrait from it. Nev gave his OK, and when he was given a copy of the painting, he was struck by how good it was, assuming that the girl was either a genius or a fraud. Nev tried to contact Abby's family, and somehow ended up in contact with Megan, Abby's sexy 19-year-old sister. As Nev fell into an increasingly complicated on-line relationship with Megan, he decided it was time to meet her in person, but when he traveled to Michigan and tracked her down, Nev learned that Abby and Megan's family were not at all what he expected them to be. Ariel Schulman, Nev's brother, began filming his brother's adventures from his first contact with Abby, and in Catfish he and Henry Joost tell this strange story from beginning to end. Catfish received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

La plupart des critiques que j'ai lues sont très positives et je dois admettre que j'ai trouvé la bande annonce très efficace. Le trailer laisse croire à un espèce de thriller, mais j'ai quand même le feeling que celui-ci est volontairement trompeur afin de piquer la curiosité du public. Ça me rappelle vaguement la même stratégie marketing qui avait été utilisée pour The Blair Witch Project et Paranormal Activity. On laisse présager un énorme punch, ce qui va nécessairement en décevoir plusieurs. Malgré tout, j'ai quand même envie de voir le film vu son thème très actuelle et sa présentation qui semble originale.

Few recent movies have more adeptly wrung together a narrative rife with grand societal insights and intimate personal details. Even fewer work as well as both a thriller and a human drama. A bidding war for distribution has commenced. I look forward to the debates the movie will surely inspire and the chance to discuss it in full, without worrying about ruining the surprises it has to offer.

At first a very intelligent, humorous, and lovable little documentary Catfish ends up as an examination of souls that would rather not be seen. It also serves as a healthy reminder that we live in a digital age, and we can make all the digital contact with a person we want, but it doesn't trump personal, face-to-face relationships.

So before you watch the trailer below or in high-res at Apple, let me tell you: you don't have to watch it. Go off my word and the word of nearly every other critic, trust that this movie is worth your time, and see Catfish knowing as little as possible. Then go watch this trailer and marvel at how much of the film it manages to give away while purporting that it's holding back the "shocking" final 40 minutes. Catfish is set for release September 17th, and with The Social Network coming out just a few weeks later the two movies may have the power to define what's becoming known as the Facebook generation. You don't have to watch this trailer to know that. Just a suggestion.

C'est sous cet angle que le réalisateur essaie de le présenter, mais j'admets que ce n'est pas nécessairement approprié. Selon ce que j'ai lu sur le film, le montage est fait de manière à supporter la trame narrative. Les événements filmés sont vrais, mais plusieurs portions ont été retranchées pour mieux "berner" le spectateur. Ça se présente davantage comme l'équivalent d'une télé-réalité, mais sous la forme d'un long métrage (cinéma-réalité?).

N'oublier pas que le documentaire est rarement neutre. Même si a la base, c'est le concept de filmer la réalité sans intervenir, c'est par définition presque impossible à moins d'un gigantesque plan large en séquence ou n'intervient aucune mise en scène ou "acteur".

Du moins, de l'idée que je m'en fais. C'est même souvent un point de vue, une certaine vision d'une réalité.

Le documentaire n'est jamais neutre en fait. Le cinéaste affirme toujours son point de vue. Lorsqu'il n'y a pas de point de vue, il s'agit d'un reportage...

Toutefois, je crois qu'il y a toujours point de vue ; le fait-même de placer une caméra à quelque part est un point de vue.
